Nervous Cabaret Trombone player Sam Kulik is in Berlin right now with the band Capillary Action and I had the pleasure of hanging with him and dragging him to an open mic at Artliners in F'Shain. It was a great excuse to play with him again, as I hadn't scene him since my wedding three month ago in Brooklyn. It was probably the most boisterous and noisy open mic I've experienced - lead by resident bartender Tom Lee Who. It was sort of like a scene from a Philip K Dick story. Suffice to say I got invited back for an actual gig on June 25th. We'll be going down to Lokal tonight on Rosenthaler Strasee tonight to check our Sam with Capilary Action.

A little history on the layers of what's happening here:
Elyas sings this song "Miners", an adaptation from a Wilfred Owen poem, on Jan's Award Winning album Songs for Love Drunk Sinners.
Jan Bell is the one who started Elyas off playing music - and he met Fred (Nervous Cabaret cornet) at her open mic, and then Elyas/Fred met Brian Geltner (Nervous Cabaret drummer who also plays with Jan) at a party of some of Jan's friends. Tim Lunztzel (the bass player in the clip ) is the bass player on Nervous Cabaret's second album release "DROP DROP" (Naive/ 2007)

Oh you heard it right... JANUARY 31, 2009 @ UNION POOL in Williamsburg, Elyas and Melissa are getting married on stage! The guys in Nervous Cabaret will herald the event and Sxip Shirey will perform the ceremony! After Nervous Cabaret plays Beat Circus will take over to keep us dancing through the night!

The inimitable Mat Clark of Three Black Eyes, and Sexy Butchers (London) made this poster using some of the lyrics from demos and rough pieces of songs that will appear on the ELYAS KHAN and THE HUNGRY GHOST album... currently being worked on in between show dates, on subway cars, in taxis, and anywhere that a mic can be plugged in!
LOOK OUT for very limited CDRoms (think of mixed hardcore show tapes back in "the day") which Elyas will have on hand at his November shows... you'll recognize them because they'll be wrapped in this poster!
Three Black Eyes current recording project invites Elyas as a guest vocalist (SORRY we can't leak their material - even though the temptation to include it on the demo CDRoms was almost overwhelming!).
Three Black Eyes will come across the channel in Dec 2008 and will play a show in Paris where they will be joined by their main vocalist Chad Parks (NYC).
Elyas will be making a guest appearance in this show... Not to be missed!

It's been another exciting week for Nervous Cabaret!

Laurence Aloir interviewed Elyas at the RFI studios, where they discuss who he'd like to be buried next to, musical influences, and played tunes from Drop Drop. A GLIMPSE OF THINGS TO COME - February 10, 2008
Man, so excited to see what Lucas Racasse comes up with again. He directed our last video for "Passion Plumbers" after a long night of drinking and merry making with yours truly. The results were transporting, literally. We were in Brussels, Paris and NYC all in one tight four minute bundle.
This time for the new "SLEEPWALKERS" video Lucas got to hit the road with us for four days and shoot the band in Liege Belgium and Vendome France (where incidentally we shared the stage with Deerhoof one of our all time favorite bands...that was cool!).
After the tour Fred and I ventured back to Brussels to complete the green screen shoot.
We improved take after take from all angles with both still shots and full video.
great work if you can get it !

Yes folks… it’s been a pretty great week!
Elyas was shipped off to San Francisco to record vocals on the third BOOK OF KNOTS project at Tiny Telephone Studios! For those of you listening to the PodCast of his Watt from Pedro Show… yes that was Elyas singing in the background!
Elyas had a great time hanging out with old friend Steve Raspa, who gave him a full city tour, complete with a tour of the Burning Man HQ. Big thanks go out to Matthias Bossi, Carla Kihlstedt, Tony Maimone, and Joel Hamilton for all their hospitality and for putting together such a wonderful project!
If that wasn’t cool enough, we got a call from another friend saying to click over to OkayPlayer because The Roots had given Pere LeChaise a big thumbs up. El Keter (one of the sites main contributors) wrote the January 22, 2008 entry:
"BASS: HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?" And yes indeedy, he does say some great things about Nervous Cabaret…
